The GE SmartWater Inline Refrigerator Filter Kit (GXRTQ) is an in-line water filter kit that installs behind the fridge, in the water supply line of your refrigerator. It can be used on any refrigerator connected to a 1/4 inch O.D. (outer diameter) metal or plastic water supply line (most refrigerators are connected this way). Once this refrigerator filter kit is installed, changing the filter is easy. The fittings are a quick connect type fitting with a shutoff valve built in, so no tools are required to change the filter - you don't even need to shut off the water. The kit includes everything you need to connect the filter to your refrigerator, including all of the fittings and one filter. Installation involves shutting off the water supply to your refrigerator, cutting the water supply line, and installing the included fittings on both of the cut ends of the line. Detailed instructions are included. The only tools you'll need are a tube cutter that can cut 1/4 inch tubing (available in the plumbing section of home improvement stores, or the tool section at Sears - about $5), 7/16 and 1/2 inch open-end wrenches, a knife, a bucket, and a file or sandpaper (optional). The filter removes 97% of Chlorine from the water and also improves taste and odor. GE recommends that you replace the filter every 6 months OR if the refrigerator has not been used for more than two weeks OR if you notice a decrease in the flow of water or objectionable tastes in the water or ice.

Customer Rating: Summary: It do what it do Comment: It's an inline water filter.
Be sure to make flat and not angular cuts on your tubing if that's the installation method you choose. My cut was not exactly square on the line coming from the fridge. When the water was turned on I heard a bit of air escape from the fridge end of the filter where my uneven cut was. By the time I could reach to that area the water pressure blew the connection out and I had black carbon filter water shooting around the kitchen. You have to laugh. Especially when it's my career to maintain complex hardware on a daily basis. Once I got the water turned off and the spill cleaned up I cut the tubing squarely and reinstalled. Been without issue since. It do what it do if I do my part.
Customer Rating: Summary: GE SmartWater GXRTQ Inline Filter is a smart buy! Comment: The GE GXRTQ water filterGE SmartWater Inline Filter Kit (GXRTQ) is easy to install and to change.
It clips into the water line under the sink, and it only needs to be changed once a year. Unlike many other filters, which are designed only for refrigerators, this one can be used also for filtered water at the sink, from a line under the sink, eliminating those un-ecological bottles. No need to get a new fridge with a water feature.
Customer Rating: Summary: Super Easy Comment: This filter was much easier to install than the other types I tried. Water tastes great too.
