I had doubts at first but Garcia proves that she knows her stuff! Customer Rating: Summary: How to spend a Million on your wardrobe and more.... Comment: This book had some nice pictures and ideas, but I don't think it is the most helpful. It also rubbed me the wrong way telling me to buy mostly items that cost several hundreds to thousands of dollars to achieve style. We all know that style is not a matter of money, but of arranging pieces from your wardrobe in an interesting manner. I wish that Ms. Garcia would of mentioned some of her favorites some high priced to moderate priced. Ms. Garcia only mentions the high priced items. That is why I recommend the other book I read recently called: How not to look old: fast and effortless ways to look 10 years younger, 10 pounds lighter, 10 times better by Charla Krupp. Since I am in my forties I found this book much more helpful in improving my style and looks, plus the author Ms. Krupp recommends low priced to high priced items. The other books I think worth checking out if you want to improve your style are: In the dressing room with Brenda: a fun and practical guide to buying smart and looking great by Brenda Kinsel; and Brenda's wardrobe companion: a workbook for getting the look you want, with the clothes you love by Brenda Kinsel. I enjoy reading books about style, but this one by Ms. Garcia is not the best and I do not recommend it. Do you really think "every" stylish woman must own these pieces? Oh, sure, you say this is only your take, but you also say "every" woman "must" own them. A caftan? An iPod? Why a white shirt? Sure, every "capsule wardrobe" list seems to include a little black dress, a white shirt and perfect black trousers/skirt, but what if you really look better in cream or can't seem to avoid spots of coffee no matter what you do? Havainas? Do you really want to tell me Carolina Herrera owns Havaianas--glorified flip flops? This is just a list of the catchy "it" items any halfway awake person could have culled from the last decade of fashion magazines and maybe one "classic" style book--the kind that tells you you have to have a white shirt, a little black dress, a trench coat, a cashmere turtleneck, etc....regardless of your lifestyle, climate, body type, coloring. Would-be stylistas, save yourself some dough. Get Tim Gunn's book and let him help you be yourself, not some magazine harpy's composite of "hot" items. "A Guide to the Pieces Every Stylish Woman Must Own" is therefore a little misleading. That said, the book is common sense and fun. Some items...good not only for Ms. Garcia but for almost every woman who cares about style and clothing....are pretty self-evident: the well-cut navy blazer, the evening clutch. Others are a little more exotic and probably more suited to Ms. Garcia's New York, haute couture world than to the rest of us. The book did inspire me to do a little inventory of my own...what I have, what I don't have and don't want, and what I would like. The writing style is comfortable and casual...altogether a good book and a handy guide to those who want to have a wardrobe which contains those pieces which will last across the years. More Reviews
